WALTER CARVALHO
Born in João Pessoa, Brazil, in 1947, Walter Carvalho is an award-winning Brazilian cinematographer who has worked in more than 70 short and feature films, such as Leon Hirszman’s Que País é Esse? (1976), Walter Salles’ Central Station (1998) and Behind the Sun (2001); and Claudio Assis’ Mango Yellow (2002). Many of his features as a director of photography were screened at the Mostra, amongst them To the Left of the Father (2001), Madame Satã (2002), Fabricating Tom Zé (2006) and The Rat Herb (2008). As a director, made the feature documentaries Soul Window (2001, Jury Prize and Audience Award at 25th Mostra), co-directed by João Jardim; Moacir Raw Art (2005) and Raul – O Início, O Fim e o Meio (2011, Audience Award for Best Brazilian Documentary at the 35th Mostra).

WALTER DOEHNER
He studied directing and production with the London BBC. As from 1977, he has worked for Mexican TV having made several educational programs and directed programs with an audience, among other forms of entertainment. He wrote and directed his first film in 1988, Deep Terror. The same year, he made El Amor de mi Vida, for TV, in addition to other telefilms such as Nada Personal (1999), Demasiado Corazón (2000).

Born in 1970. He graduated in film history from the University of Bologna before attending the Italian National Film School. He has been working as an editor for the Italian film industry since 1996. He has edited almost all of Luca Guadagnino’s projects and collaborated on the script for the film I Am Love (2009).

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1929. His debut came in 1952, with the film O Gigante de Pedra. He also directed films like Men and Women (1964), As Amorosas (1968, 36th Mostra), O Convite ao Prazer (1980), Eros, o Deus do Amor (1981) and Amor Estranho Amor (1982). His last film, Paixão Perdida (1998), was screened at the 22nd Mostra. Died in São Paulo in 2003 at the age of 73.

WALTER LIMA JR.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1938, he graduated in law. During the 1960’s, he worked as a film critic. Started his directing career with Plantation Boy (1965), followed by Brazil Year 2000 (1968, in exhibition at the 39th Mostra). Lima Jr. is also known for directing movies such as The Lyre of Delight (1977), Inocência (1983), The Oyster and the Wind (1997) and Out of Tune (2008).

Began a career as a sound editor and won various awards, such as Beijo (1990), Anjos da Noite (1988), Abrasas (1986) e Cidade Oculta (1985). He has also directed short and medium features, such as Um Minuto para a Meia-Noite (1983) and A Voz do Brasil (1980). In 1990 he directed his first feature film: Beijo 2348/72, prize-winner at the Brasília and Gramado Film Festivals. Olhos de Vampa is his second feature film.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1956. In 1991, he directed his first feature film, High Art (1991, 15th Mostra). He was a member of the 19th Mostra’s International Jury, in 1995. In partnership with Daniela Thomas, he directed Foreign Land (1995), Midnight (1998, 23rd Mostra), a segment of Paris, I Love You (2006, 30th Mostra) and Linha de Passe (2008, 37th Mostra). Salles is also the director of Central Station (1998), winner of Golden Bear at Berlin International Film Festival, Behind the Sun (2001), The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), On the Road (2012) and Jia Zhangke, a Guy from Fenyang (2014, 38th Mostra). At the 41st Mostra, Salles exhibited the short movie When the Earth Trembles, part of the feature film Where Has the Time Gone? (2017). He produced, among others, Madame Satã (2002), Love for Sale (2006) and Habi, the Foreigner (2013), all of them screened at Mostra.

WAN LAIMING
Born in Nanjing, China. He was one of the Wan Brothers, the pioneers of the Chinese animation industry, and became China`s first animator. As the director of the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, he would raise the standard of Chinese animation to an international level. He directed The Princess Iron Fan (1941), the first Chinese animated film, and The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven (1961), now restored in a new version with modern animation technology.

Born in Nanjing (China) in 1964. The son of laborers, his first job was in a factory. He studied journalism in evening classes. He graduated in cinema at the Academy of Peking where he was assistant to Chen Kaige. At this time, he wrote film reviews. Between 1996 and 2001, he published one novel and three short stories one of these being The Orphan of Anyang, the basis for his first film.

Was born in China in 1965. Graduated from the acclaimed Beijing Film Academy and joined the Xi’an Film Studio after his graduation in 1991, writing screenplays between assignments as a producer. He made his directorial debut with Lunar Eclipse (1999). He also directed The Story of Ermei (2004); Tuya’s Marriage (2006), Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival; and Weaving Girl (2009). Apart Together is his fifth feature film.

Born in China in 1942, he moved to Taiwan in 1949. After years of working as a costume and artistic designer, he made If I were for Real (1981), his first film as a director. He is well-known for his Taiwan trilogy: Straw Man (1987), Banana Paradise (1989), and Hill of No Return (1992).

Born in China in 1965 and, in 1988, Xiaoshuai graduated at the Beijing Film Academy. He was one of the pioneers in Chinese independent cinema in the 1990s. His first feature, The Days (1993, 18th Mostra), is based on the true story of his school friends. At Mostra, he also presented Beijing Bicycle (2000), winner of the Silver Bear at Berlin International Film Festival, Drifters (2003) and Shanghai Dreams (2005), winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival. Among his other works are In Love We Trust (2007), best screenplay at Berlinale, and Chongqing Blues (2010).

Born in Australia in 1970. He started his career as a cinematographer and documentary director for Australian TV. Thornton wrote and directed several shorts, like Green Bush (2005) and Nana (2007), both awarded at the Berlin Film Festival. Samson & Delilah (2009, 33rd Mostra), his first feature film, won the Golden Camera award at the Cannes Film Festival. Among others, he is also director of The Darkside (2013), of a segment of the collaborative feature Words with Gods (2014, 38th Mostra) and of the documentary We Don`t Need a Map (2017).

Richard Glatzer - Born in New York, in 1962. He has a doctorate in American Literature by the University of Virginia and published a book of essays about Frank Capra. His first feature as director was Grief, in 1994. In partnership with Wash Westmoreland, he made the controversial feature The Fluffer (2001). In 2004, he wrote and directed a committed documentary Gay Republicans, awarded the Prize from the Public for Best Documentary by the American Film Institute Festival. Wash Westmoreland - Born in Leeds, in the UK, 1966. He graduated in Politics by the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He moved to the US and made his first short film, Squishy Does Porno! (1994). He was the director for pornographic films. His experience in the adult film industry, contributed to his conceiving The Fluffer (2001) his first feature as director.

He’s a graduate of Cornell University’s filmmaking program. He has directed and edited music clips for several top music talents, including Outkast, 311, and Brazilian Girls. A video he made for Arrested Development’s front man Speech, Spiritual People, went to #1 on MTV Japan. Wayne leveraged his music industry connections to create his ideal soundtrack on The Doorman, his feature directorial debut.

Born in Munich, Germany, in 1942. Herzog is one of the three biggest exponents of the New German Cinema, together with Rainer W. Fassbinder and Wim Wenders. In 1968, he directed his first movie, Signs of Life. Since them, he has produced, directed and written more than 40 films. Besides being a writer and author, Herzog is also a stage director, having realized several operas and plays. Diretor alemão, nascido em 1945. Estudou psicologia, depois trabalhou por pouco tempo como jornalista. Em 1967, começa a produzir curtas em 8 mm. Sua paixão pela ópera e pela cantora Maria Callas em particular marcariam sua carreira de cineasta. Seu primeiro longa, Eika Katappa (1969), premiado no Festival de Mannheim, integrou ópera, literatura e teatro. Entre seus filmes, figuram A Morte de Maria Malibram (1972), Flocos de Ouro (1976), Os Irmãos Napolitanos (1977), Concílio do Amor (1982, Prêmio da Crítica na 7ª Mostra), 0 Imperador das Rosas (1987) e Malina (1991). Schroeter também é conhecido como encenador teatral e diretor de óperas, entre elas, La Wally, de Catalani, a Tosca, de Puccini, e Fidélio, de Beethoven.

Werner Schroeter nasceu em 1945 e começou fazendo fazendo Super-8. Ganhou celebridade em 1978 com o longa "O Reino de Nápoli" que dirigiu na Itália. Seu longa seguinte "Palermo oder Wolfsburg" foi premiado no Festival de Berlim. "Concílio de Amor", com Magdalena Montezuma, recebeu o prêmio da Crítica na 7ª Mostra. Participou também da 10ª Mostra com o longa "Sobre a Argentina". Peter Kern nasceu em Viena, em 1949. Ator veterano, participou de diversos filmes na Alemanha. Atuou para os diretores Peter Lilienthal ("Jakob von Gunter",71), Rainer Werner Fassbinder ("Mundo ao Telefone", 73; "O Direito do Mais Forte", 74; "Despair - Uma Viagem Para a Luz", 77), Wim Wenders ("Falso Movimento", 75), Hans-Jürgen Syberberg (Hitler - Um Filme da Alemanha, 77) e Werner Schroter ("Malina", 91), entre outros. Entre os filmes que dirigiu estão "Ishmael Bernal-Truth and Dare"(92), "Gossenkind"(91), "Hab`ich nur deine Liebe"(89) e "Um Punhado de Prazer- Crazy Boys"(87).

He was born in 1965 in Brazil, from German and Italian-Brazilian families. In the middle of 80’s, he studied photography, screenwriting, and editing at Fundação Cultural de Curitiba, and started his career directing experimental short films in Super 8. He directed Pioneers of Cinema (1995) and experimental short films like Birth Labor, Volk! and O Poeta e a Rainha, screened at Oberhausen Film Festival (Germany). In 2001, he co-produced and co-directed the romantic comedy Where the Poets Die First, screened in Chicago Latino Film Festival. In 2005, he started to work in his South Trilogy with the feature films The Chorus, The Dimension and Sun in the Mist, set in the south of Brazil.

His next features were Rushmore (1998), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), The Darjeeling Limited (2007), Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and Isle of Dogs (2018). He has been nominated for seven Academy Awards.

Born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1977. He majored in Communication and Art from PUC-MG - the Minas Gerais Catholic University, in 1999. In 1996 he developed the Mosquito Project, where he is, today, creative director. He studied cinema at the International School of Cinema and TV in San Antonio de Los Baños, in Cuba. He worked in the cinema department of the Italian Fabrica. He is active in graphic design, photography, video, cinema, and installations.

His debut in film direction occurred with the musical comedy Good Times (1967), followed by works such as The Birthday Party (1968) and The Boys in the Band (1970). In 1971, he directed The French Connection and in 1973 made The Exorcist, iconic film and cultural phenomenon that changed the direction of horror productions. His filmography also includes, among others, the features The Wages of Fear (1953), Cruising (1980), To Live and Die in L.A. (1985), Bug (2006) and Killer Joe (2011), all of them present at the 40th Mostra program. Friedkin will be honored with the Leon Cakoff Prize.

WILLIAM GAZECKI
He began to make documentaries in 1991, following a successful career on television where he contributed to well-known serials such as Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere. With Waco: the Rules of Engagement, from 1997, he was awarded prizes at the Sundance, Melbourne, and Vancouver Film Festivals, and was nominated for the 1998 Academy Award in the category. His film, Reckless Indifference, from the year 2000, was awarded the Golden Satellite Award. He also directed Crop Circles: Quest for Truth (2002) and Invisible Ballots (2004). He is producing a film, A Thousand Faces: The History of the Screen Actors Guild (2006).

Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1945. Wenders studied at the Munich College of Film and Television. He is one of the exponents of the New German Cinema of the 1970’s. He directed the features The American Friend (1977, 3 rd Mostra), Hammett (1982, 8 th Mostra), The State of Things (1982, 8 th Mostra), winner of the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival, Tokyo-Ga (1985, 10 th Mostra) and Paris, Texas (1984, 13 rd Mostra), Golden Palm at Cannes Film Festival. He also directed Until the End of the World (1991, 16 th Mostra), Nick’s Movie (1980, 15 th Mostra), Ode to Cologne (2000, 26 th Mostra), Land of Plenty (2004, opening film of the 28 th Mostra) and Don’t Come Knocking (2005, 29 th Mostra). In 2010, he designed the poster art for the 34 th Mostra, that screened a retrospective of his filmography, and came back to São Paulo for the opening of an exhibition of his photographs at Masp. He also directed a segment of the film Invisible World (2012, 35 th and 36 th Mostras), produced by Mostra. The Salt of the Earth (2014), co-directed by Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, Every Thing Will Be Fine (2015) and Submergence (2017) are some of his recent films.

Escreveu ainda o livro `Die Abrechnung`( O Ajuste de Contas).

Born in Hemer, Germany, in 1954. Director and screenwriter, he studied History and American Studies at the Free University of Berlin, and cinema in the German Academy of Film and Television. Schmetterlinge (1988, 18th Mostra), his first feature film, won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival. He also directed Child`s Play (1992, 18th Mostra), Life is All You Get (1997, 21st Mostra), Good Bye Lenin! (2003, 27th Mostra) and was one of the directors of Welcome to São Paulo (2004, 28th Mostra), a collective film produced by Mostra and dedicated to Abbas Kiarostami. He was part of the jury of the 30th Mostra.

Born in 1960. He graduated in 1986 in business management and photography. His first work was the documentary One Day of Tito (1982), followed by a further eight documentaries. Miracle in Juazeiro was awarded the special prize from the jury and that of best supporting actress (Marta Aurélia) at the Brasília Film Festival in 1999. The docudrama received prizes for best editing - feature at the 4th Film Festival in Recife (2000), best actor (José Dumont) at the 3rd Luso-Brazilian Film Festival and best documentary at the Montevideo International Film Festival.

Born in 1976 in the Malaysian town of Ipoh. He received a scholarship at San Diego State University. Since his return to Malaysia, he has directed numerous music videos, commercials and television works. His first film was Monday Morning Glory (2005). His second one, The Elephant and the Sea (2007), won the Special Jury Prize in Torino Festival. The Tiger Factory was shown in Director’s Fortnight at Cannes Festival.

He was born in Allan Stewart Konigsberg on 1935, in Brooklyn, New York. He has directed over 30 films, the first of these in 1966, What`s Up, Tiger Lily? His memorable work includes Bananas (1971), Manhattan (1979), Zelig (1983), Broadway Danny Rose (1984), The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), Bullets Over Broadway (1994), Celebrity (1998) and many others. He has received 18 nominations for the Academy Awards and won prizes for Original Script and Direction for Annie Hall, in 1977, and for the Original Script of Hannah and Her Sisters. Sweet and London was shown at the 24th Mostra. His recent films have been shot in London, Match Point (2005), Scoop (2006) and Cassandra’s Dream (2007); and in Barcelona – Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008, 34th Mostra).

Born in Taiwan in 1952. He wrote more than ninety screenplays, such as The Puppetmaster (1993) for Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Jen had his directorial debut with A Borrowed Life (1994) and followed it up with Buddha Bless America (1996). He also has an acting career, having played the main role in Edward Yang’s Yi Yi (2000).
