CACÁ DIEGUES
Born in Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil, in 1940. Raised in Rio de Janeiro, he studied law at PUC. He was one of the founders of Cinema Novo movement, along with Glauber Rocha and Leon Hirszman. He began his career directing a segment of the film Cinco Vezes Favela (1962). Also in the 1960s, he directed his three first features: Ganga Zumba (1964), A Grande Cidade (1966, 40 th Mostra) and Os Herdeiros (1969). After living for a brief period abroad, he returned to Brazil to direct When Carnival Comes (1972, 41 st Mostra) and Joanna Francesa (1973). In 1976, he directed Xica da Silva (35 th Mostra), his most popular film, and after he made Summer Showers (1978) and Bye Bye Brasil (1980). After an absence in the beginning of the 1990s, he directed Tieta of Agreste (1996), Orfeu (1999), God Is Brazilian (2002) and The Greatest Love of All (2006). The Great Mystical Circus, his most recent movie, was chosen to run for a spot among the five nominees for the 2019 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2018, Cacá Diegues was elected immortal of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1971. Caco Ciocler is an actor, producer and director. Beyond his work at soap operas and television series, he has already been in the cast of some films exhibited at Mostra, such as Almost Brothers (2004, 28th Mostra), De Menor (2013, 37th Mostra) and Simonal (2018, 42nd Mostra). He also directed the documentary Departure (2019, 43rd Mostra).

Caetano Gotardo

Born in Vila Velha, Brazil, in 1981. He got his degree in film and video from the University of São Paulo’s School of Communications and Arts. He directed the short films Areia (2008), which opened the 2008 Semaine de la Critique in Cannes, O Menino Japonês (2009), Os Barcos (2012) and Merencória (2017). He also made the features The Moving Creatures (2012, 36th Mostra) and Your Bones and Your Eyes (2019), presented at International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Xavante Indians that live in the village of Etenhiritipá on indigenous land in Pimentel Barbosa, north of Mato Grosso state. The population is of some 550 persons who took part in the filming of Darini, The Xavante Spiritual Iniciation. Caimi and Jorge have completed three other similar projects. To finalize the document, they had the support of the Methodist School of Communication and the Nossa Tribo NGO.

Depois de trabalhar por sete anos como diretor de fotografia e iluminador, Caio Ribeiro estréia na direção de longas com Algum Dia em Agosto. Nascido no Brasil e residente em Nova York há 15 anos, ele foi premiado no Festival de Huy, na Bélgica, por seu curta Ballad For Two Lovers.

He studied Film at FAAP, in São Paulo. He began his career in 1996 as an a production assistant on the film Chronically Unfeasible, by Sergio Bianchi. He worked as an assistant director and a production assistant on countless short-films, documentaries and TV series. He directed the short-films Metástase (2002), Keró (documentary, 2003) and Amor de Mula (2004). He directed a documentary for TV, Catástrofe de Caraguá (2008). An Ordinary Man is his first feature-length film.

He graduated in film from New York University. In 2003, his film, Motoboys - Vida Loca, won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 27th Mostra. His next film was The Day Brazil Was Here, (2005, 29th Mostra). On TV, he directed episodes of the original fiction series (FDP) for HBO. Freedom Station is his first fiction feature film.

Caíto Ortiz Born in Rio de Janeiro, in 1971. He studied cinema at New York University and specialized in directing actors and directing photography. He directed two short films, Esperando Loreta, in 1994, and O Beijo, in 1995, and photographed a further six films abroad. In 1998, he returned to New York to photograph Running Short, an independent feature by Mario Mandujano. As from 2003, he has been associate director for Prodigo Films. With Blind Spot, in 2002, he won the Prize for Best Documentary at the 27th Mostra. João Dornelas With a documentary, Água Benta, Fé Ardente, Água Ardente Fé Benta, the script writer and director of documentaries and commercials for TV won the Special Prize from the Jury at the Rio Film Festival in 1999. The Day Brazil Was Here is his first feature.

Born in Petrosani, Romania, in 1975. His family emigrated to Germany in 1983. In 1994, he returned to Romania in order to study film directing in Bucharest. After a series of short films, he made his feature film debut with Maria (2003), winner of the Special Prize of the Jury at the Locarno Film Festival. He also directed Medal of Honor (2009) and Child’s Pose (2013, 37th Mostra), which reiceived the Golden Bear and the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin Film Festival.

Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1959. In 1984, she acted in only one film, Next of Kin, by Atom Egoyan. As independent producer, she has worked with the most important Canadian directors such as Egoyan himself, Deepa Mehta, and Jeremy Podeswa. She was assistant-director in Family Viewing (1987, shown at the 12th Mostra), also by Egoyan. Her partnership with this filmmaker extended to other films: she produced Speaking Parts (1989), The Adjuster (1991), selection for the 16th Mostra, Exotica (1994), at the 18th Mostra, and The Sweet Hereafter (1997), at the 21st Mostra. For Podeswa, she produced Eclipse (1995) and The Five Senses (1999), shown, respectively, at the 19th and 23rd Mostras. In 1988, she directed and produced Crossing the River, a short documentary. A Stone`s Throw is her first feature as director.

Born in Lauro Freitas, Bahia, 1983, Freitas works in film as cinematographer and director. She directed short films such as Birdie (2003), Asphalt and Red Earth (2010) and Ararat (2014). Landless is her first feature.

Born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1965, Guimarães studied philosophy at Minas Gerais Federal University and holds a master degree in photographic studies in London. He explores the intersection between cinema and visual arts. His works have been exhibited in museums and galleries such as the Tate Modern, in London, the MoMA and the Museu Guggenheim, in New York. He also took part on the 25th and 27th Bienal Art Exhibitions in São Paulo. He has directed several short films, including Aula de Anatomia (2003), Epilogue (2006) and Memory (2008). In 2001, he directed his first feature, the documentary The End of the Endless (2000, 25th Mostra), in partnership with Lucas Bambozzi and Beto Magalhães. He has also directed the feature Accident (2006, 30th Mostra), Drifter (2007, 31st Mostra), Ex-It (2010, 34ª Mostra) and Otto (2012).

Cao Hamburger Frankenstein Punk (1986), his first short film was greatly acclaimed thanks to the precision with which it was made, having obtained several winning awards. By 1995 he had made another three short films. A filmmaker whose main target and subject matter is always children and teenagers, Cao was responsible for the creation of the TV series Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum in the 90’s. Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum – O Filme is his first feature film.

She grew up in Los Angeles with two identities, Armenian and American. She left the U.S. in 1979 to make films about human rights atrocities in other countries. She directed the TV documentary Zarmina: Lifting the Veil in 2002. But it wasn’t until Screamers that she could tell the story of her own people. The denial by the Turks of the Armenian genocide has motivated her in her work for as long as she can remember.

CARLITOS RUIZ RUIZ Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1974. Studied photography at the University of Puerto Rico and Film Direction at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His short film Pelota de Papel was awarded at the Hamptons Film Festival, amongst others. Besides his work as commercial director, he’s also a founder and professor in the Taller de Cine Corto Circuito and in the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. In 2003 he started to make his first feature film Maldeamores, winner script from the audience in the Scene Slam competition in Puerto Rico. MARIEM PÉREZ RIERA She graduated in Film and Theater Direction from the Miami University in 1995, with courses in Documentary Direction at the New York University and workshops in editing and directing at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in Cuba. She has worked as a director in television programs, stage manager, theatre teacher, has directed and edited music videos and commercials, and has worked as a teacher in the Taller de Cine Corto-Circuito and in the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. The first documentary film she directed is Cuando Lo Pequeño Se Hace Grande, awarded at the Los Angeles International Independent Film Festival in 2002 amongst others. Maldeamores is her first feature film.

Film critic and director, was born in Bologna in 1938. He began his activity as a critic in the 1950s and edited the magazine Film Selezioni between 1959 and 1963. He directed his first short film, La ‘Menzogna’ di Marzabotto (1961), in answer to a neo-Nazi pamphlet that denied the Marzabotto Massacre. He was assistant director to Pier Paolo Pasolini in films such as Mamma Roma (1962, 26th Mostra) and Rage (1963, 26th Mostra). He curated, among others, the Italian versions of Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow Up (1967) and The Passenger (1974). He started directing films for RAI Television. He has written and edited several books, devoting most of his subsequent activity as critic and scholar to the work of Antonioni. He debuted as a feature film director with Per Questa Notte (1977). He has also directed the feature A Film for Mont Sole. Man, Earth, Memory (1995). He is a member of the International Jury of 34th Mostra.

Nasceu em Roma, em 1922, e vem dedicando sua vida ao cinema. Trabalhou como crítico de cinema, ator diretor de cinema e televisão, roteirista, entre outras atividades. Como diretor, ele começou com documentários, estreando em 1951 com Achtung! Banditi!. Sua produção vai de documentários a comédias, de faroestes a thrillers, mas sempre com uma visão investigativa sobre a sociedade italiana.

He was born in Naples (Italy) in 1967. In 1993, he graduated in History of Films at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Bologna. He worked as an assistant director for Marco Risi and Ricky Tognazzi and directed two short films, Il Cinema Salato (2000) and the documentary Grieving Canaries (2003). His first feature film was the awarded North Cape (2003). Beneath the Same Moon is his second feature and got a Special Mention by the Jury at the 2006 Annecy CinemaItalien Festival (France) and also the Golden Award at the 2006 Cairo International Film Festival.

He was born in Padua, Italy, in 1956, and later went to Bologna to study performing arts. Directed his first shot film Vagabondi (1979), before moving to Rome to become a scriptwriter. He made his first feature film, Notte Italiana, in 1987, followed by The Bull (1994) and Vesba va Veloce (1996). La Passione was presented in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

Agulló directed the short films The Gift (2006), The Wait (2008), Ana Cronia (2008), Pizza Eli (2008) and Next Station (2011). Plot for Peace (2013), his first feature, won the Jury Prize and the Audience Award, both in the best documentary category, at the 37 th Mostra. All the Other Days is his second feature film.

Born in Coruche, Portugal. Amaral studied film in Porto until 2007. Since then, he has worked with visual effects and film directing, both for cinema and publicity. He made short films, such as Longe do Éden (2013) and Por Diabos (2016). Infinite Sea is his first feature film.

Justine Shapiro was born in South Africa and grew up in Berkeley, California. Goldberg was born in Boston, but grew up near Jerusalem. Fluent in Hebrew and in Arabic, he has become an expert in viable alternatives and solutions for the conflict in the Middle East. Carlos Bolado became known as editor of Like Water for Chocolate (1992), by Alfonso Arau, in addition to 12 Mexican films, and this film Promises. In 1993, he directed his first short film Rites. He made Under California: The Limit of Time, his first fiction feature in 1999.

Começou sua carreira no Brasil, filmando documentários em curta-metragem como A Balsa, Retrato de um Vaqueiro e Carnaval em São Luís, todos de 1973. Seu primeiro longa é A Faca e o Rio (1972). Entre seus outros filmes, feitos na Holanda, estão Utz (1991), vencedor do Urso de Prata de melhor ator para Armin Mueller-Stahl, 0 Homem que Queria Saber (1988, seleção da 13ª Mostra 1992, na refilmagem americana, com o nome de 0 Silêncio do Lago) e Crimetime (1995).

Born in 1914 in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, he directed films in his country of birth as well as Peru, Venezuela and Chile. In 1945, he arrived in Brazil. His filmography includes more than 50 films that competed in the major film festivals in the world, among them La balandra Isabel llegó esta tarde (1950), Mãos Sangrentas (1955), Three Loves in Rio (1959), A Intrusa (1979), winner of the best director prize at the Gramado Film Festival, and ¿Somos? The filmmaker recently joined Walt Disney Animation Studios, where he currently works as director of Raya and the Last Dragon.

Born in Abruzzo in 1963. In the early 80`s he moves to Rome and earns a degree in Literature. He has written and directed various journalistic inquiries. As a writer he appears in several short story anthologies. He is the author of the screenplay Parenti Serpenti (17th Mostra), directed by Mario Monicelli, a film acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, as well as the same-titled theater piece (staged without interruption for eight years in Italy and Spain). In 1996 he wrote and directed Come mi Vuoi, Italo-French co-production, the first Italian film delving into the realities of the "transgendered," in which he launched the duo Monica Bellucci / Vincent Cassell, which subsequently gained worldwide notoriety.

She co-directed documentaries like Une mouche dans la salade (1989), Shocking Manjira and the cardboard box (1990) and Un portrait de la Belgique, which was shown on French TV. She debuted in fiction with the short Melanomen (1992). After that, she made the silent midfeature Taxi Dancer (1997), that received a special mention at the Sundance Film Festival. Lost Persons Area, her first feature, was selected for Critic’s Week at Cannes Festival and won SACD Prize, from the Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers.

Writer, director and producer with a portfolio in narrative film and advertising. Originally from Pennsylvania, she attended the Art Center College of Design where she earned an MFA in Film. In 2007 with the script of The Memory Game she won a place in the Outfest Screenwriter’s Lab. A Place to Live is Carolyn’s first feature film.

Was born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1972, and studied Direction at the Caragiale University of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography, in Bucharest. He has directed music videos and several short films, amongst them Trafic (2004), awarded with the Golden Palm for best short at the Cannes Film Festival. His first feature film, The way I have spent the end of the world (2006), was presented at the 30th Mostra. He is also the screenplay writer, producer and editor of Florin Serban’s If I want to whistle, I whistle (2010, 34th Mostra).

The french director was born in 1948 and, at the age of 19 (in May, 1968), she wrote her first novel, fiction, L’Homme Facile. She has published a further eight books. In cinema, she was co-script writer for directors such as Federico Fellini (And the Ship Sails On), Liliana Cavani (The Skin) and others. She directed her first film in 1975, A Real Young Girl, also in this 25th Mostra. She participated in the 19th Mostra directing one of the episodes from the film As Regards Nice, a tribute to film maker Jean Vigo. She directed seven other films, amongst these Romance, in 1999.

Born in 1961, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. He attended the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques, but did not complete either of the two courses he began. He did, however, graduate in cinema from the University of New York. He directed his first short film in 1984. Glamour Toujours and directed his first feature in 1992 – Rien du Tout. In 1996, he adapted Family Resemblances for cinema, a theater play by Jean-Pierre Bacri and Agnes Jaoui, which furthered their career in cinema. He is an actor, scriptwriter, and director in the majority of his films the best known in Brazil being When the Cat’s Away ( 1996) and Good Old Daze (1994).

NICOLAS BÉNAC He’s a professor of Political Sciences at the University of Paris. From 2001 to 2003, he produced the documentary L’Odyssée des Musiques. In 2004, he produced the documentary Une Histoire de Rap à Bamako. In 2006, he worked in pre-production for the documentary De Mémoire d’Anciens and edited the documentary La Voi d’un Peuple. In 2008, he produced the documentaries Terres des Saintes and Santiago Pinetta. CEDRIC ROBION An Engineering graduate, he went on to study Industrial Design at PUC Curitiba and at the School of Management at the University of Laval, in Quebec. In 2002, he produced the documentary L’Odyssée des Musiques. He founded Telemac Production in 2003. He was the producer and director of photography on the documentaries Une Histoire de Rap à Bamako (2004), Expédition Prototype (2005) and De mémoire d’Anciens (2006). In 2006, he was director of photography on the documentary Malouines, les laissés pour guerre and produced the documentary Terres des Saintes in 2008. In 2009, he directed the documentary Metamorphosis of Anguilla.

Graduated in communication from the ECA-USP, Célia Catunda is a visual artist, writer, producer and animation director. Kiko Mistrorigo graduated in architecture from the FAU-USP and works as a director and producer at Pinguim Content, a production company founded in partnership with Célia in 1989. They created and directed together the animation series Peixonauta (2009-2013), O Show de Luna (2014-2021) and Gemini 8 (2014). Together with Rodrigo Eba, they co-directed the animated feature Peixonauta - O Filme (2018).

In 1997, his screenplay Otario was filmed by Diego Arsuaga and was considered the Best First Work at the 1997 Havana Film Festival. He teaches screenplay at the Uruguay Film School.

He was second assistant to the director and screenwriter for The Enchanted Night, directed by legendary Chinese director Chor Yuen. After he left Golden Way, he wrote six other scripts, including Close Escape (1989) and Run and Kill (1993). A great upholder of independent production, Wai-hung directed his first film, After the Crescent, in 1997.

Born in London in 1889, Charles Chaplin began working as an actor and comedian at the age of 19, achieving success on stage. He was hired by Keystone Studios in 1914 and began his screen career starring in many shorts films, directing many of them himself. Known for his character “The Little Tramp”, he soon became one of the most influential personalities in the world. In 1919, he founded United Artists, giving him complete control over his work. He soon began directing feature films: The Kid (1921), The Gold Rush (1925), The Circus (1928), City Lights (1931) and Modern Times (1936), the latter preserving the lack of dialogue from silent film despite the development of sound. With The Great Dictator (1940), his controversial film satirizing Adolf Hitler, he entered the world of talkies and stopped playing his most famous creation, The Tramp. His filmography continued with films featuring dialogue: Monsieur Verdoux (1947), Limelight (1952), A King in New York (1957) and A Countess from Hong Kong (1967). He died in Switzerland in 1977, at the age of 88.

Together with their other daughter, Jen, they decide to spend a weekend on a trip from Los Angeles to the Arizona desert to see the Grand Canyon. Maggie’s car breaks down which makes the journey sheer hell. Some of the well-kept secrets of each are made known, all of which with desastrous consequences. As a result, all four begin to see themselves and their family in a new light. The film was awarded prizes in the film festivals in Seattle, Austin, Fort Lauderdale, Saint Louis, and Atlanta.

Desde 1952 vem realizando documentários e filmes de ficção, nos quais sempre procurou criar a interação com o espectador, com propósitos históricos ou documentais. Ganhou projeção internacional ao ter seu curta-metragem La Jetée adaptado por Terry Gilliam para o longa Os Doze Macacos. Seu filme Lettre de Siberie foi selecionado para a 13ª Mostra. Born in 1955 in Algeria, from Spanish parents. Photographer and documentary filmmaker, he took part in the protests against the Vietnam War in the 1970’s. His entire filmography is dedicated to extraordinary political and social situations. His filmography includes over 15 documentaries that have been presented at some of the most prestigious festivals and TV markets worldwide. He moved to El Salvador in 2003. In September 2009, he was murdered in San Salvador.

Since 1983, he has directed several documentaries, most dedicated to the Afghan situation, like Les Combattants de l’Insolence (1985). In 1998, he concluded Massoud, l’Afghan, a feature project about Afghan’s resistance leader Massoud, which took sixteen years and also generated a book written by him. De Ponfilly died on May 2006, months before The Soldier’s Star was released in France.

Moscow, Belgium is Christophe van Rompaey’s debut as a feature film director. While still at film school, Christophe (1970) directed two shorts (Zap and Façade) and wrote two more. After his studies, he became casting director and assistant director on many shorts, commercials and features. In 1998, Christophe established himself as a first assistant director with the feature Man van Staal (directed by Vincent Bal), a credit he was to have on seven more features produced in Belgium and in the Netherlands. Christophe continued to work on his own stories. He wrote and directed three dark and mysterious shorts: Grijs (1995), Ex.#N°1870-4 (1999) and Oh my God?! (2001) which were visually riveting and won awards at various festivals. Christophe went on to direct twelve episodes of the popular relationship series Team Spirit (2002). Moscow, Belgium won Grand Golden Rail and Acid Award at the Cannes Festival Film 2008.

Nasceu em Macau, na China, mas mudou-se para Hong Kong aos dez anos. Atualmente ela vive na Austrália. Antes de se dedicar ao cinema, tentou a carreira em Letras, graduando-se em Literatura Inglesa na Universidade de Hong Kong. Transferiu-se para Londres para estudar roteiro e direção na National Film and Television School. Como conclusão de curso, realizou o filme They Say the Moon is Fuller Here, que venceu uma placa de prata no Festival de Cinema de Chicago, em 1985. Dirigiu ainda Farewell, China (1990), Autumn Moon (1992), Temptation of a Monk (1993), Wonton Soup (1994) e Vidas Flutuantes (Floating Life, 1996, seleção da 20ª Mostra), entre outros.

Depois foi assistente de Bernardo Bertolucci em 1990 e La Luna. Mais tarde, escreveu e dirigiu o curta-metragem Couples and Robbers, que foi indicado ao Oscar e ao Prêmio Bafta. Foi premiado com a Concha de Prata em San Sebastian por `Guerra aos Turistas` (High Season), sua estréia em longa-metragem. Seu segundo filme, o thriller Sauce For The Goose, ganhou o Prêmio de Público no Festival de Cognac. Clare vive em Londres, com seu marido Bernardo Bertolucci.

With David Mamet`s help, he co-founded the Atlantic Theater Company in New York in the late `80s, and in 1990, made his Broadway debut in Aaron Sorkin`s drama A Few Good Men. Besides acting in and directing plays, he participated in TV shows and played roles in films like The Usual Suspects (1995), by Bryan Singer, and Magnolia (1999), by Paul Thomas Anderson. His first screenplay became What Lies Beneath (2000), directed by Robert Zemeckis. Choke is his directorial debut.

He made a cinema critical to the French bourgeoisie, exploring the thriller genre and influenced by Hitchcock and Fritz Lang. He directed over 70 productions between films and TV series. Among his main films are Handsome Serge (1958), The Good Time Girls (1960), The Unfaithful Wife (1969), The Butcher (1970), The Hatter`s Ghost (1982), Hell (1994), La cérémonie (1995), Merci pour le Chocolat (2000), The Bridesmaid (2004) and Comedy of Power (2006). He died in 2010, at the age of 80.

Lanzmann possesses honorary doctorates from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Adelphi University, the University of Amsterdam and the European Graduate School. In 2009, he wrote The Patagonian Hare, his memoirs. He is known for films such as Shoah (1985), A Visitor from the Living (1997), Sobibór, Oct. 14, 1943, 4 P.M. (2001) and The Last of the Unjust (2013). In 2013 he received the Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement at the Berlin Film Festival.

Born in Paris in 1937. Director, producer, and photographer, he has directed 50 films, including A Man and a Woman (1966), winner of the Palm d’Or in Cannes and the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Traveling with his father, he made several amateur documentaries, leading to Le mal du siècle (1954), winner of the amateur film division of the Cannes Film Festival. After making short films, he established Les Films 13, a production company, and produced, co-wrote, directed, and acted in his first feature, Le Propre de l`homme (1960). In 2007, he had a special retrospective of some of his films screened in the 31st Mostra, such as Bolero (1981), All That’s for This?! (1993), Les Miserables (1995), Le Courage d’Aimer (2005) and Crossed Tracks (2007).

Quando começou a estudar cinema em Paris, nos anos 60, os ídolos de Claude Massot eram Bergman e Buñuel. Depois de dirigir teledramas para a TV francesa, Massot começou a fazer documentários, a pedido do produtor, Pierre Dumayet. Nos 20 anos seguintes, viajou pelos quatro cantos do mundo, realizando documentários na África, América do Sul, Austrália e Filipinas. Apenas em 1983, Massot resolveu voltar à ficção, retratando a história de Robert Flaherty entre os esquimós. Seu sonho se tornou realidade em 1994, quando finalmente finalizou Kabloonak.

CLAUDINE BORIES She began her career in theatre. Between 1970 and 1976, she took part in the movement of the decentralisation of theatre in France, taking productions to towns in the country. In 1968, she directed her first documentary, Femmes d’Aubervillers, and followed that with Juliette du côté des hommes (1981), which was selected for Cannes Festival. Between 1990 and 2002, she helped run Péripherie, a creative centre dedicated to documentary cinema in Seine Saint Denis, and started the Documentary Cinema Meetings. She was also president of Addoc, a group that brings together French documentarists. On top of her documentaries, she’s directed various short-films and one feature-length fiction film, La Fille du Magicien (1990). PATRICE CHAGNARD At the age of 17, he ran the Grenoble Film Club, the biggest club in France in terms of members. He moved to Paris in 1965, where he studied Philosophy at the Sorbonne. He worked as a editor in chief at the magazines Témoignage Chrétien and Télé-Ciné and directed documentaries for TV. In 1969, he became a hippie and travelled the world for three years, getting to know countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistian and India. A defender of Liberation Theology, he became interested in the plights of the farmers in Brazil, Africa and Bangladesh. Since 1977, he’s dedicated himself to directing documentaries, first for TV and then later for cinema, beginning with Le convoi (1995). He was president at Addoc, a group that brings together French documentarists.

Passa, então, à criação de roteiros para a série de TV Lucky Luke, com Terence Hill, e também para o cinema. Ao mesmo tempo, publica dois romances, Sotto Roma e Il Sole è Innocente, e trabalha como jornalista para o jornal Paese Sera e o suplemento semanal Il Sabato. Em 1993, debuta na direção com o filme Quattro Bravi Ragazzi, que participa do Festival de Veneza na seção Midnight Events. Este é seu segundo filme.

Logo depois de estrear como diretor, faz um novo curso de cinema em Berlim e realiza seu segundo filme: Transes - Reiter Auf dem Toten Pferd, que é selecionado para o Festival de Berlim.

Born in San Bernardino, USA, in 1894. He began his career in 1912 working in sports editorials of newspapers such as San Bernardino Sun and Los Angeles Times. His first job with cinema was for Universal Pictures, in 1919, writing intertitles. In 1921, he was hired by Warner Brothers to create gags to Buster Keaton. Since then the duo began a successful partnership in which Bruckman signed the scripts of the movies starred and or directed by Keaton, such as Our Hospitality (1923), Three Ages (1923), The Navigator (1924) and Seven Chances (1925). He made his directorial debut in 1925 with the short Cowboys Cry for It. A year later, in 1926, he directed his first feature film, the classic The General, with Buster Keaton. Throughout his career, he was alternating direction and script. Died in Los Angeles, USA, at the age of 60 in 1955.

Born in Valente, Bahia, in 1937. She graduated in theater from Bahia Federal University (UFBA). She was part, as actress, of several theater shows in Bahia, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro. In cinema, she acted under the direction, among others, of Glauber Rocha (O Dragão da Maldade Contra o Santo Guerreiro, 1968), of Geraldo Sarno (Colonel Delmiro Gouveia, 1978), and of her husband, Orlando Senna, (in addition to Rough Diamond, she acted in Iracema, uma Transa Amazônica, of 1975/80, that Orlando co-directed with Jorge Bodansky). She taught class at the San Antonio de los Baños School for Cinema and TV in Cuba and at the Instituto Dragão do Mar. She directed a documentary, Memória do Sangue (2004), on Canudos, awarded a prize at the Jornada de Cinema da Bahia.

He then co-wrote and shot a 40 minute mine feature with Arabic director Saleh Karama, Time Left (2003) winner of the Prix de Juru Emirates film festival. He then completed a master in anthropology at SOAS (the School of African an Oriental Studies). After shooting in 2003 another short — Breathless (Talent Campus at Berlinale 2004) and a low budget feature — Love Struck (Best Film, Portobello Film Festival 2004) he turned his attention to directing. Soul Carriage (2007) won the Best New Director Award at San Sebastian Film Festival 2007.

She was curator for Brazil at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. She founded Comtexto Produções e Publicações Artísticas Ltda. and dedicates herself to the project about cinematography called “Moviemento”. Enlightened is her first feature.

Born in 1949, she grew up in Jamaica and the Fiji Islands, later studying art in Britain. She worked with independent and experimental film in London during the 70s, then moved to Berlin and became involved with the International Forum of Cinema and the Arsenal Kino. Her feature films are Study of an Island (1979), The Party-Nature Morte (1990) and The Invisible Frame (2009). A House in Berlin is her fourth feature film.
