Tributes of the 43rd Mostra: Assayas, Gitai and Suleiman were celebrated in this edition

A talented trio was honored by São Paulo International Film Festival during this 43rd edition. The French director Olivier Assayas, whose most significant films were screened as part of a retrospective, was present at the opening ceremony of the festival, on October 16th. At the solemnity, he received the Leon Cakoff Prize and exhibited Wasp Network, his most recent feature, with the presence of the actors Edgar Ramírez and Leonardo Sbaraglia, and the producer Rodrigo Teixeira. Assayas also met with the public to talk about his work and career.

Amos Gitai, a long-time friend of the Mostra —the director exhibited 41 films at the festival— was also honored at this edition. He received the Leon Cakoff Prize for transforming his unique perspective of the Israeli and Palestinian conflict into a way of looking at the world, and into an aesthetic and cinematic vision. Two of his films were screened: Berlin-Jerusalem (1989) and Kadosh (1999). Besides that, Mostra held a special event for the release of Em Tempos como Estes, published by Ubu and edited by Mostra in partnership with Ventre Studio. The book gathers the correspondence of Gitai’s mother, Efratia, between 1929 and 1994.

The Humanity Award, in turn, was given to Elia Suleiman for his way of seeing the world and for highlighting, through his cinema, the experience of Palestinians and exiles around the globe. The director received the trophy before the exhibition of It Must Be Heaven, his most recent work. The films Chronicle of a Disappearance (1986) and Divine Intervention (2002) were also screened at the festival.
