A serial killer known as "The Avenger" is on the loose in London, murdering blonde women. A mysterious man arrives at the house of Mr. and Mrs. Bunting looking for a room to rent. The Bunting`s daughter is a blonde model and is seeing one of the detectives assigned to the case. The detective begins to suspect the lodger may be the avenger.

Restored by the BFI National Archive. Principal restoration funding provided by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, The Film Foundation and Simon W. Hessel. Additional funding provided by British Board of Film Classification, Deluxe 142, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur and Ian & Beth Mill. New score commissioned by Network Releasing in partnership with the BFI.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK

Born in Leytonstone, in the suburbs of London, in 1899. In the early twenties, he began his career as a storyboard designer. After working as an assistant director and a screenwriter, he made his first feature film, The Pleasure Garden (1925), followed by The Mountain Eagle (1926). One of the most important filmmakers in history, he directed movies like 39 Steps (1935); Rebecca (1940), winner of the Academy award for best picture; Rope (1948); Strangers on a Train (1951); Rear Window (1954, 24th Mostra); The Trouble with Harry (1955); The Man who Knew Too Much (1956); Vertigo (1958); Psycho (1960) and The Birds (1963). He died in Los Angeles in 1980 at the age of 80.
