To the west of Texas, a Mexican peasant, Melquiades Estrada, is found dead, killed by a shot. The local authorities quickly bring the inquiry to a close without pointing to any guilty parties and proceed with the burial. Melquiades? best friend, however, overseer Pete Perkins, struggles to re-open the case, but no one supports him. He conducts an investigation on his own and discovers the involvement of a frontier policeman, Mike Norton. Pete is decided to take justice into his own hands, forces the guilty party to dig up Melquiades? body, and drags them along, obsessed by the idea he must bury his friend in his native land, Mexico.
