Editorial SPCINE

The Mostra has been established for many years as the most important celebration of world’s cinematography in Brazil. Those who love cinema have in this event an assured meeting point for aesthetic immersion and access to cultural diversity of the planet. For a few intense days, São Paulo becomes the world capital of cinema. Hundreds of works are handpicked by the sensitive and always surprising curation by Renata de Almeida and staff.

In the year that the Sao Paulo International Film Festival reaches 40 years, Spcine is approaching the second year of activity with qualitative and quantitative results. Results that certifies the importance of this public company for the development of audiovisual in São Paulo. To this date, the company has invested, in partnership with Ancine and the City Department of Culture, more than R$ 36 million in the segment, three times the average of the last ten years. More than one hundred films produced in São Paulo were included in public notices and programs, some of them already launched and others in ongoing production. The São Paulo Film Commission, a Spcine department that authorizes and manages the requests for filming, is also proving the strategic value of audiovisual. From May to August 2016, the activity moved more than R$ 168 million in São Paulo with productions of all sizes. In the public education sphere, the Film Circuit Spcine should overcome in October the mark of 200 thousand spectators, most of them in the suburbs. For the first time, the circuit exhibits films –with high quality projection and sound - to an audience that goes far beyond the expanded center.

To keep on achieving good results, this whole context needs a favorable locus for the exchange of film experiences and a calendar of events and festivals allowing this subject to be continually absorbed by the population. That is exactly what the São Paulo’s Mostra offers throughout the period. Spcine is proud to actively participate in the program this year not only by screening movies in its theaters, but also with two activities. One in partnership with BrLab that will explain to beginner professionals how the international film market works; the other is the Cinema, Soft Power and the BRICS seminar, which will bring together the experts from the economic bloc to discuss public policies for the audiovisual industry. May we all have a great Mostra!

Alfredo Manevy, Spcine Executive Chairperson
