PROJECTED DISTANCES

Has globalization made the world larger or smaller? New technologies allow access to information coming from the far corners of the globe, redefining the idea of closeness. However, instead of the dreaded standardization of culture, one sees an increasing visibility of various forms of expression - such diversity, almost unapproachable, brings back the sense of vastness that seemed to have been left behind.

The most suitable here is to take the contemporary paradox that puts together the far and the near. It manifests in urban daily life, where people with different worldviews tangent trajectories and notice sometimes an unexpected kinship, and other times an unbridgeable distance. The consequences for the field of culture are eloquent.

The emergence of new voices discredits the validity of once hegemonic cultural patterns; it is necessary to understand the richness of this plurivocity. The International Film Festival, reaching the 40th edition in 2016, offers the opportunity for direct contact with this heritage, built every day by individuals around the world.

The films that Mostra screens annually update the possibilities arising from the relationship between cultures and film language. For SESC, realizing the importance of this initiative involves the effort to enhance its dissemination: in 2016, in addition to exhibitions in CineSesc and inland and coastal units, there will be screenings at SESC Campo Limpo, Osasco and Belenzinho.

The partnership between SESC and Mostra reflects their convergence towards cultural democratization. This convergence underlies the belief that contact with cultural assets may broaden horizons while approaching sensitivities.
