The film is set in a small village in Rajasthan in India where the lowest castes and the women have few rights. This unfair social situation begins to change when four women start to demand better conditions of life. The village then becomes a microcosm of democracy, a parable for an ideal world. The struggle for these women, however, is not to be easy. The male caste that holds sway over the council in the village uses political power on its own behalf and is not willing to forfeit this privilege. The women, on the other hand, long for power to improve living conditions for the community. Together, they are to undertake a journey through the desert, that will serve so they may assess female conditions in society. The main theme of the film is based on a poem by Kabir, a poet from the 15th century, whose verses ridicule all forms of oppression by means of the power of love and of truth.
