Jacek, a drifter, murders a taxi driver, brutally and without motive. His case is assigned to Piotr, an idealistic young lawyer who is morally opposed to the death penalty, and their interactions take on an emotional honesty that throws into stark relief for Piotr the injustice of killing of any kind.

KRZYSZTOF KIEŚLOWSKI

Born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1941, and studied film at the Lodz Film School. He gained international acclaim with The Decalogue (1988), a series of ten films originally filmed for television. Two episodes were expanded into feature films: A Short Film About Love (1988), winner of the Audience Award at the 13th Mostra, and A Short Film About Killing (1988), which won both the Jury and the International Critics Prize at Cannes. He directed films like Camera Buff (1979, 5ª Mostra), Blind Chance (1987), The Double Life of Veronique (1992, 16th Mostra) and The Three Colors Trilogy: Blue (1993, 17th Mostra), White (1994) and Red (1994, 18th Mostra). He died in 1996, two years after announcing his retirement.
