Karina dreams of becoming an actress and of setting out to see the world. Antônio is in love with her and promises to bring the world to Nordestina, a settlement lost in the hinterland of Brazil, where no one wishes to remain. The town is divided in two: those who are leaving, and those who are thinking about going away. Antônio leaves the village in what appears to be a kamikaze crusade to openly avow, on television, that he will give his beloved all she could wish for, or face a deadly machine he has invented. To flee fate, he also says he will travel into the future. On the day he has set, all of the population of Nordestina are there, expecting Antônio to live up to his promise.
