Led by a boy, a cheeky hoodlum, four children from a village lost in the mountains set off on a chancy journey towards the railroad that cuts through the steppes on a path that was once the Great Silk Route. The four children will try to board the train, a vehicle that has become a kind of microcosm for the continent, in that the passengers are a possible future for those children. One of these passengers, a painter who lives from the portraits he can make, has just been put off the train, for not having a ticket. The encounter between the painter and the children is to decide the fate for all. The painter may, through them, be able to find someone interested in his work and thus discover new paths possible for his life. The children are to see in him a master to be followed, or they may realize it is about time to head for home.
