The legend that gives the movie title was taken from the history of Georgia, south of the Caucasus. Preparing to defend their homeland against foreign invaders, the locals build a fortress, but each time the walls reach the height of the roof, they collapse. The revelation of a dowser indicates the solution: "The wall will hold if the most handsome man is walled in it”. Director Sergei Paradjanov dedicated this production to all Georgian soldiers who gave their lives for their country. The film received the Critics Prize of the 11st Mostra.
