The Killers

A small-town diner is visited by strange men who soon reveal themselves to be hired killers. Before the outlanders find out that their target, a Swede, is not really there, they tie up a customer in the kitchen and cause other claustrophobic situations, leading to an unusual resolution that relativizes the fatality of death. Based on the short story of the same name by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1927.
Divided in only three scenes, this short was the first of three films Tarkovsky made while studying at VGIK, the state film school. Despite choosing to adapt the story himself, the lack of filming equipment forced Tarkovsky to cease some directorial duties to his classmates who were also graduating: Maria Beiku and Aleksandr Gordon. The “perverse” Western atmosphere and customs, coupled with the Russian dialogue, were received with awkwardness by audiences at the time. Tarkovsky’s professor, director Mikhail Romm (1901-1971), praised the final result.

Nasceu em 1932 em Zavroje, pequena cidade russa a margem do rio Volga, filho do poeta Arseni Tarkovski (nascido em 1907). Seus estudos alcançam interesses diversos: música depois pintura, a escultura, o árabe, trabalha na Sibéria como geólogo. Só em 1956 entra no VGIK, o instituto central do cinema soviético. Estuda cinema quatro anos sob a direção do mestre Mikhail Romm. Seu longa de estréia e mestrado é "O Rolo Compressor e o Violino" ("Katok I Skrypka", 1960). "A Infância de Ivan", de 1962, ganha Leão de Ouro no Festival de Veneza. "Andrei Roublev", de 1966 fica vários anos inédito sem razão compreensível. "Solaris", de 1972, leva o Prêmio Especial do Júri de Cannes e cria o mito de ser a versão oriental ao "2001" de Kubrich. "O Espelho", de 1974, provoca violentas críticas em seu país e só ganha fronteira em 1978. "Stalker", de 1979, tem problemas de produção e marca o seu derradeiro filme russo. Roda "Nostalgia" em 1983 na Itália e leva em Cannes 84 o Grande Prêmio de Criação. No mesmo ano decide viver no Ocidente diante da negativa de ter seu passaporte renovado. "O Sacrifício" ganhou em Cannes 86 outra vez o Prêmio Especial do Júri. Morreu no exílio, em 1986, na França.
