It’s the late 1950s, in an affluent and quietly respectable part of Buenos Aires. Young Sulamit Löwenstein strikes up a friendship with her next-door neighbor Friedrich. She is the daughter of German-Jewish immigrants to Argentina and he is the son of a senior SS officer, a tragic political legacy which both characters struggle to escape from over the next three decades.

JEANINE MEERAPFEL

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1943. She left Argentina in order to study cinema in Ulm, Germany. Her first short film was Abstand (1966), followed by her first feature, the documentary Regionalzeitung (1967). She eventually moved to narrative film with Am Ama am Amazonas (1970) and works since then with documentary and fiction. She returned to Argentina to direct the political drama The Girlfriend (1988), with Liv Ullman.
