Born in 1932 in Nova Friburgo, in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, he began his career in film during the early 50s as a production assistant at Atlântida Studios, working with directors such as Watson Macedo, José Carlos Burle, and J.B. Tanko. He made his first films in the same studio, Rico Ri à Toa (1957) and No Mundo Lua (1958). He also directed Cidade Ameaçada (1960), Um Candango na Belacap (1961), O Assalto ao Trem Pagador (1962) – an absolute classic in the Bazilian thriller genre –, Selva Trágica (1964), and the film trilogy starred by Brazilian rock singer Roberto Carlos: Roberto Carlos em Ritmo de Aventura (1968), Roberto Carlos e o Diamante Cor-de-Rosa (1970), and Roberto Carlos a 300 km por Hora (1971).
