General Clive Wynne-Candy is a blustering old duffer who seems the epitome of stuffy, outmoded values. But forty years ago he was a different man altogether: the young and dashing officer "Sugar" Candy. Through a series of affecting relationships with three women and his touching lifelong friendship with a German officer, Candy`s life unfolds as it becomes more difficult for him to adapt his sense of military honor to modern notions of "total war."

Restored by the Academy Film Archive in association with the BFI National Archive, ITV Studios Global Entertainment Ltd., and The Film Foundation.

MICHAEL POWELL

Born in the United Kingdom in 1905. He started his career in France, worked as a still photographer for British productions and was one of the directors of The Thief of Bagdad (1940). With Emeric Pressburger he formed the production company The Archers and launched their first film as a duo, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943). In 1995, Powell and Pressburger had a retrospective of their work at the 19th Mostra, which exhibited films such as Black Narcissus (1947) and The Red Shoes (1948). Powell died in the United Kingdom in 1990 at the age of 84.
EMERIC PRESSBURGER
EMERIC PRESSBURGER

Born in Hungary in 1902. He started working as a journalist in Hungary and Germany, where he became a screenwriter. The Nazi ascent forced him to move to England, where he met Powell. They formed the production company The Archers and launched their first film as a duo, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943). In 1995, Powell and Pressburger had a retrospective of their work at the 19th Mostra, which exhibited films such as Black Narcissus (1947) and The Red Shoes (1948). He died in United Kingdom in 1988 at the age of 85.
