Where do people’s memories go when they are no longer alive to personally tell their stories? What happens to memories when the only proof of their existence lies in lifeless documents archived in a basement? For more than 40 years, John Spalek has been travelling across the US, meeting exiles in the hopes of saving their documents for prosperity. The people he meets are all elderly, and being 83 years old himself, he knows that time is running out for him and for his generation. Spalek knows that the documents he fails to rescue will be lost forever.

GREGOR EPPINGER

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1977. He studied German literature, sociology, and cultural sciences at Humboldt University in Berlin. He directed the short documentaries Trauern mit Würze (2009), Die Heilsarmee (2010), The Wedding (2012), and Zugperlen (2012). Mr. Spalek’s Cases is his first feature.
