Slipper Room is one of these night clubs in New York where freedom is the order of the day and prejudice is out. Drag kings, female counterparts of drag queens, are bent on proving their maleness, some only for one night, others for all of a lifetime. They are the main characters in Venus Boyz, a film by Swiss director Gabrielle Baur, under the name of Gabriel Baur. This German-Swiss-American co-production introduces characters such as Mildred with her hair styled to generate sweet virility; Del LaGrace Volcano, who intends to transform her body with doses of testosterone hormone; and pioneer dancer Diane Torr. The film also includes Bridget Markland, Mo Fisher, Storme Webber, Queen Be Luscious, Mistress Formika, Shelly Mars, Simo Maronati, and others.

GABRIEL BAUR

After completing studies in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Zurich, Gabriel Baur attended the Film Department of New York University in 1983-84, where she made her first shorts. Dividing her time between New York and Central America, she worked as assistant director on film and theater productions, and made a documentary on the struggle of women in a revolution-torn Nicaragua.
