This is the story of Alice Bonnard, a girl who studies in Saint-Sulvien, a girl’ school. The action takes place “in one of these months of July and August, in the turbulence of the sixties”, when the conflict of generations was the theme. Beautiful Alice is spending her holidays with her parents in the country. They manage a sawmill and have recently hired woman-chaser Jim. Business is not doing too well, but Mr and Mrs Bonnard, closed up as they are in their pride, cannot admit to imminent failure of the business. The couple is out of their minds with a cool attitude, and they despise Jim’ efforts. A complicating factor adds to the relationships within this environment about to collapse: Alice’ blind love for the seductive employee from the sawmill. However, she dare not talk to him, conscious that Jim practically ignores her very existence. She is often in his vicinity, but the barrier of silence only grows more acute. The more Alice approaches Jim, the greater the barrier of communication.
