A Man and a Woman

A woman, her daughter and their memories; a rally driver and his children; cars, trains, and a beach are the setting for a very simple love story to the background of music (Chabadabada‚Ä¶) that circled the world. In Deauville, a young widow of 30, Anne Gauthier is on a visit to her daughter, studying in a boarding school in town and living in a guesthouse. Jean-Louis Duroc is also on a visit to see his son Antoine, a student and guest at the same address. He is a widower, a racing driver. When she is about to go back to Paris, Anne misses the train and Jean-Louis offers her a ride. On the way, they strike a friendship and Anne tells him she misses her husband a great deal. The week goes by and Jean-Louis can only think of the beautiful woman he met. The following Sunday, they meet once more on the beach at Deauville, with their children. Jean-Louis confesses to her what his real profession is and that his wife wanted to die after he suffered a severe car accident. The film was awarded the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival in 1966 in addition to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film and original screenplay in 1967.
