A screen is divided into four, and different stories take place concomitantly, in real time. At a given moment, all blend unexpectedly. The script, a black humor comedy satirizes the Los Angeles life style and, literally, unfolds before the spectator?s eyes to tell the story of four characters involved in screening tests for casting for the film "Bitch of Louisiana". Filmed in real time, or be it, as a continuous take, without editing, that lasts for 93 pre-determined minutes. Four cameras dance their way through half a dozen scenarios and run through the streets with amazing continuity following the characters in and out of meetings, commitments, and confrontations. On screen, the images from the four cameras are shown simultaneously either in horizontal strips, with four images projected from left to right or stacked two and two. All of these resources allow the spectators to edit the film on the retina", as their attention shifts from one image to another and they try to follow the plot. The solution found by Mike Figgis may be seen as a deconstruction in digital format, of the traditional film projection and editing techniques where 24 frames are projected each second.

MIKE FIGGIS

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1960. He began to make films at the age of 14 when his father gave him a Super-8 camera. He became known internationally with his first film, Tetsuo (1987), a kind of ‘lysergic Jaspion’ about a boy that has his body changed into metal. Tsukamoto assumes the influence of the Japanese series and confesses that his favorite series in his teens was Ultra Q. A continuation of his first film, Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1991, 16th Mostra), was awarded the Grand Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. He also made Tokyo Fist (1995, selection for the 19th Mostra) and Bullet Ballet (1998), shown at the 23rd Mostra.
