Ravi and Masha have known each other since they were young. They are in love, but both are forced to work as slaves weaving carpets for a shop in the vicinity of Calcutta. But Ravi does not wish to live as he does forever and saves up all of his money to put an end to the slavery. All of this changes when he discovers that Masha is to be sold. He then uses all of his money to buy the girl her freedom. Once she is free, Masha promises she will wait for Ravi, however long it takes, but a series of contingencies is to prevent their love from ever being fulfilled, as hoped. The film was produced by director and scriptwriter Helmut Dietl, author of some of the biggest blockbusters in recent German cinema, like Schtonk! (1992) and Rossini (1997).
