Young director Jonathan Nossiter and screenwriter James Lasdun decided to record their experiences with displaced persons on screen. Nossiter is an American who grew up in Europe and Lasdun is British, living in the U.S. They endeavor to explain what leads a man to fall in love with his own wife, having previously exchanged her for another. This is the case for Alec Fenton, a businessman who has moved to Athens with his wife, Marjorie, his daughter Siri and their son Marcus. Harmony comes to an end when Alec meets Katherine with whom he sets up residence in the U.S. Doubts as to the decision taken are soon evident, and Alec decides to make his way back to Europe to attempt to reconstruct his life. He finds Marjorie involved with another man, Greek journalist and political activist Andreas Thimis, who exerts strong influence on his ex-wife and children. Alec is thus the protagonist of affective and territorial displacement, permeated with anguish as to ownership and abandonment - situations that are potentially highly emotive.
