The complex subject of a family marked by persecution had been dealt with by Frans Weisz and his script writer Judith Herzberg in the much acclaimed Polonaise (1989). Twelve years later they gathered the same cast and the same technical team to film Qui Vive, also a film within a film. In Polonaise, Alexander was recording scenes of the marriage of his former wife, Lea, to Nico. Now, he will also make a sequence from his documentary with new characters. Dory, Nico?s first wife is pregnant. The father of the child is Simon, Lea?s father. Nico is in a state of crisis and abandons his job as director of a hospital. He retires and goes to the farm where he was hidden during the war. Hans, Nico?s best friend, marries Pien who is converted to Judaism by him. Zwart, Nico?e father, is ever more isolated and far from the world, incarnating the suffering of all of a people and a generation obliged to bear on their shoulders the traumas of World War II.
