Patrick Bateman embodies the values of the eighties almost to perfection. The young New Yorker is most charming, in extremely good taste, with the best brand names, goes to trendy restaurants and discos, works out at the right academy. In high style, he earns his way in Wall Street taking every advantage of the financial boom of the decade. Nevertheless, things may not be quite what they seem and, below the surface appearance, Bateman is really a monster that does the rounds in New York at night cutting the throats of beggars and prostitutes. Evelyn, his bride-to-be, Courtney, the cleaning woman, and Jean, his beautiful secretary - all are unsuspecting. Even detective Donald Kimball is duped for some time by his seductive nature. Until Bateman comes face to face with someone more terrible than he is: his double, Paul Allen. In respect to Patrick Bateman?s personality, director Mary Harron says: "The obsessions of society become an exorbitant weight for him. Whereas most young people despise poor people, he kills them. If the others want only to break their competitors, Bateman is out to kill them. Some look askance at women... he kills them. MARY HARRON

Born in Canada, studied literature in Oxford. She worked for "Punk" music magazine and as a critic for several English newspapers. She published articles on the Velvet Underground group and on artist Andy Warhol for the "New Musical Express" and "Melody Maker." She made short films for two BBC series, namely The Late Show and Edge, in addition to various documentaries for Channel Four, including one on South Africa in the fifties, Winds of Change. Her first feature as director was I Shot Andy Warhol, 1996. Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and shown at the Cannes Festival that year. She is married to director John C. Walsh.
