Lucia, a young teacher living in Madrid, returns to her native town after the death of her father. She is to find the city of her youth much changed: La Isla, in the region of Poniente de Andalucia, has become multiethnical. The city from which the inhabitants previously emigrated to the north of Europe in search of a better life, developed agriculture and became a center for great waves of immigrants from Morrocco, Lithuania, and from the peoples in the south of the Sahara. Fear is generalized and can be felt in the air. Lucia decides to stay on in La Isla and carry on with her father?s business. In her new life, she meets Curro, a man with no roots seeking a place to live. When they meet, they feel drawn to one another and start on a love affair.
