Mehrdad and Sohaila are two out of hundreds of Iranian youths who have decided to sell one of their most valuable possessions : their kidneys. Iran is one of the few countries where the sale of organs is permitted, even subsidized by the State. Mehrdad is unemployed and needs money for his wife’ illegal abortion. Sohaila provides for her two sisters and can‚Äôt make ends meet. They turn to one of the many state-sanctioned kidney agencies in Iran. There, they meet the recipients to negotiate the price : one of the more grotesque underbellies of a society with no regulations, where the most desperate party is always a loser. The documentary offers viewers a unique insight into the Iranian organ market.

NIMA SARVESTANI

He was born in Iran and has been living in Sweden since 1984. Nima started his career as a journalist in Iran and in Sweden he has worked for SVT and TT, in Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. But mainly since his move to Sweden he has been working with his own films: he has made the documentaries The Viscous Circle (1998), Many Years Later (1999), Naked and Wind (2002), Iranian Kidney Bargain Sale (2006), besides the short-film Dead Man’s Guest (2003). Iranian Kidney Bargain Sale was awarded the Gold Nymph, at Monte Carlo Film Festival 2007 for best documentary.
