Alex, a 16 years old teenaged boy skateboarder accidentally kills a security guard in the vicinity of Paranoid Park, Portland’s tough streets park. He decides to say nothing about it. He and his friend check out a mythologized skate park. The youth’s attraction to its culture of punkish freedom and the hypnotic rhythms of ball bearings on concrete lead him into a fast friendship with a low-life anarchist. Something horrific happens at the nearby rail yards, and suddenly our young man is at the centre of a criminal investigation. But what crime did he commit, if any? Youthful world reinforces the isolation Alex feels from everyone outside his meaningful subculture.

Nasceu em Kentucky (EUA), em 1951. Estudou na Rhode Island School of Design. Mudou-se para Nova York , onde dirigiu filmes publicitários , e depois para Portland, Oregon. Dirigiu curtas como The Discipline of D.E. (80). Realizou videoclips para David Bowie, Elton John, Tracy Chapman e Red Hot Cili Pepers. Seu primeiro longa foi Mala Noche (87). Dirigiu em seguida Drugstore Cowboy (89, exibido na 14º Mostra) e Garotos de Programa (My Own Private Idaho, 91), com River Phoenix e Keanu Reevers. Lançou um livro de fotografias intitulado `108 Portraits`.
