Lilya is 16 and lives in a poor, shabby suburb somewhere in the former Soviet Union. Her mother has moved to the U.S. with her new husband. Lilya is expecting her mother to send her some money so she can travel and meet them. The money never arrives and Lilya realizes she has been abandoned. She is then obliged to move to a minute apartment with no light or heating. Disillusioned and penniless, she is in despair. Her only friend is Volodya, a boy of only 11 who, at times, sleeps the night on her sofa. Lilya then meets and falls in love with Andrei who asks her to start a new life in Sweden. Volodya suspects that everything has happened too fast, but Lilya travels just the same.
