A documentary that marks the return of director Carol Morley to Manchester, a city in England where she took to drink for five years of her life in the eighties. The Alcohol Years is a poetic recollection of those times when friends and acquaintances told stories about drunks and promiscuity in general. This is a private portrait of the characters of a city highly involved with the worldwide culture of pop. To make the film, the Director, who could not be said to recollect a great deal about those years, placed announcements in the newspapers in search of people who might have known her between 1982 and 1987, to make statements. Her search proved fruitful. These are important statements, such as that from Pete Shelley (of the Buzzcocks Group), from Alan Wise (night club promoter), Douglas Hart (former component of the Jesus and Mary Chain Group), and Adam Chodzko (a plastic artist who was part of the Sensation exhibit in London and New York) - all are part of the film.
