The complete trilogy as a documentary on World War I, begun with the films Prigioneri della Guerra (1995) and Su Tutte le Vette é Pace (1998), made based on the permanent collections of the Trento Historical Museum and of the Italian Historical War Museum in Rovereto. Among the documents utilized under the historical investigation by Diego Leoni, are 600 texts written by soldiers and refugees who describe their memories and experiences of the conflict. In addition, a vast amount of audiovisual material on the people of Trent was used as a base for a detailed study of the universe of World War I, whose physical and psychological consequences were among the most dramatic in the twentieth century.
