Dissatisfied with the communist regime in force in East Germany, swimming champion Harry Melchior decides to run away. He does not wish to abandon Lotte, his sister, but promises he will return to rescue her. After he manages to cross the frontier with false documents, Harry seeks out help from Mathis, his engineer friend, and of two other young activists. The swimmer intends to build a tunnel below the wall that separates East Berlin from the West. The plan is accepted by all, for Mathis intends to save his girlfriend and Fred wishes to bring his mother over. Vic is an idealist always wishing to do something for freedom. To finance the project, Harry makes an agreement with a U.S. TV network, NBC, that is to have exclusive rights over coverage of the plan. The Tunnel is based on real facts.
