What Are We Doing Here? explores why the charity given to Africa over the last five decades has been largely ineffective and often harmful. The film tells the story of Brandon, Nicholas, Daniel and Tim Klein who travel across Africa in an attempt to understand one of the greatest problems of our time: the failure to end poverty.

BRANDON

Brandon Klein Born in 1978 in St. Paul Minnesota, Brandon Klein grew up in England and studied Film and Economics at Middlebury College in Vermont. An entrepreneur from an early age, Brandon started an online natural health company and grew it to be the largest in Europe. After several years working with Fortune 500 companies on Wall Street, Brandon gave it all up to be an independent filmmaker. Nicholas Klein Born in 1980 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Nicholas Klein grew up in England and studied Philosophy, Religion and Ethics at the University of London. Nicholas was a child actor in a Gerry Anderson’s sci-fi series Space Precinct and it was this experience that got him interested in film. He made his first documentary at the age of 16 about the aggressive skating scene in London (Crown Jewels). Daniel Klein Born in 1982 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Daniel Klein grew up in England and majored in Political Movements at NYU. An activist from an early age, Daniel has been involved in a number of human rights and social justice causes around the world. As well as being a filmmaker and activist, Daniel is a chef at a New York City restaurant. Tim Klein Born in 1983 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tim Klein grew up in the Twin Cities and studied Film, Communications and African History at the University of Minnesota. Africa has been an important part of Tim’s life since listening to his father and grandfather tell stories of their experiences on the continent. Tim has been traveling and working in Africa since high school and it was those experiences that inspired him to make a film about the complexities of development in Africa.
