The year is 1973, a time of parliamentary elections in Chile. In the streets, interviews with the population in general show a country divided with, on one hand, those in favor of President Salvador Allende who has already started his program of socialist reform; and, on the other, the supporters of the opposition consisting of the National Party and of the Christian Democratic Party. The victory of the opposition, which had been estimated as certain, is not to be, aggravating the campaign to render the government non-viable, with boycotts in parliament, strikes, and with street demonstrations.

PATRICIO GUZMÁN
PATRICIO GUZMÁN

Born in Chile in 1941, he studied filmmaking in Madrid, specializing in documentary cinema. In 1973 he filmed The Battle of Chile (3rd Mostra), a five-hour documentary about Allende’s period of government and its fall. In the same year, he was arrested and had to leave Chile, moving to Cuba, then Spain and France. Amongst others, Guzman directed the features The Compass Rose (1983, 7th Mostra), In the Name of God (1987), Obstinate Memory (1997), The Pinochet Case (2001) and Nostalgia for the Light (2010, 34th Mostra). In its 38th edition, Mostra also exhibited Boris Nicot’s documentary about Guzman, Filming Obstinately, Meeting Patricio Guzmán (2014).
