In India, Mrs Bakshi is on the look-out for good marriage parties for her four beautiful daughters. However, Lalita, one of them, says she will only marry for love. When she meets Will Darcy, an American entrepreneur, a love/hate relationship builds up between them. Lalita cannot stand the prejudice and lack of respect that Will shows as regards India. And he will not put up with her complaints on the subject. She regards him as a spoiled American. This is the bollywoodian version of Jane Austen?s novel, Pride and Prejudice.

GURINDER CHADHA

Born in 1951, in Kenya. The daughter of Indian parents, she was brought up in England where she began a career as reporter and directed documentaries for the BBC, BFI, and Channel Four. An actress, script writer, producer and director, she founded Umbi Films in 1990. Bhaji on the Beach in 1993, was her first feature awarded the prize from the jury at the Locarno Film Festival. She also made A Nice Arrangement (1994), What\`s Cooking (2002), and Bend it Like Beckham (2002) winner of the special prize of the jury and prize from the public at the Women\`s International Film Festival, in Bordeaux. Bride & Prejudice was awarded prizes by the British Independent Film Award.
