Vietnam, in the early nineteenth century. On his deathbed, Tuy, young Hien?s stepfather tells him the story of Ly An, his mother, who lived in the village. She fell in love and got pregnant and, because she would not tell the name of the father of the child, was obliged to abandon the baby in the bed of a river. However, a great storm fell on the village and killed part of the population. The baby was saved by three carpenters, and Tuy was one of them. Before Tuy finishes the story, he dies. So, Hien journeys to the village to find out about his past. He discovers that the three carpenters were all of them much in love with his mother, but that the idyllic existence of these men was destroyed by jealousy.
