After having been advised that he has won a Nobel prize, Italian writer Alberto sets off on a journey by car from Italy to Sweden. With him is a young journalist, Alessandro, who has interviewed him daily. The award, is however, only a detail in his thoughts, filled insistently with the image of the woman he has always loved and whom he has abandoned out of sheer selfishness. Now upon his professional success, she is back, more alive than ever, but only in his dreams. The journey is soon to become a voyage of self-discovery for both. Alessandro is to be initiated into the mysteries of literature. Alberto is to become aware of all of a void that has been the hallmark of a lifetime for him. The journey is to change them forever.
