Brazilian general Antônio de Souza Netto was the protagonist of important episodes in the history of Brazil. In addition to commanding the troops, Netto was responsible for proclaiming the Rio-Grandense Republic (1836), he fought in the Farroupilha Revolution (1835-1845) and in the Paraguay War (1861-1866). He was wounded in this war and taken to the Military Hospital at Corrientes in Argentina. There he was visited by Sergeant Caldeira, an old friend and former slave. Together, they reminisce over battles, rebellions, friends and enemies. That encounter, however, makes it clear, that they were bound by more than recollection and friendship.
