Documentary on the life of Benedita da Silva, the first black woman to be admitted to the Brazilian Senate. The plot follows along from Benedita?s childhood in the Rio shantytowns all the way to success in a political career. The film focusses on work done with the needy population, their religious beliefs and small details from day-to-day life. She sings, dances, laughs, cries, prays, recites poetry, and makes political speeches. Co-Director Maria Luisa Mendonça is also author of a book on Benedita, written in partnership with Medea Benjamin.

MARIA LUISA MENDONÇA

Maria Luisa Mendonça Maisa, as she is known, has been producing films and documentaries for cinema and TV for over fifteen years on a diversity of subjects (architecture, music, human rights, violence, etc.). Indonesia: One Struggle, One Chance (1997) and Islands on Fire (1996) are on human rights and democracy in Indonesia and Timor East. Instants (1995) is on the life of a Chilean immigrant. Everyday Art (1994) is on Cuban music and dance. Vicente Franco The director has worked on over ten documentaries on human rights in Latin America and among Latinos in the U.S. His filmography includes headings such as The Fight in the Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers´ Struggle, The Challenge of the Next Generation and Freedom on My Mind (indicated for an Oscar).
VICENTE FRANCO

The director has worked on over ten documentaries on human rights in Latin America and among Latinos in the U.S. His filmography includes headings such as The Fight in the Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers´ Struggle, The Challenge of the Next Generation and Freedom on My Mind (indicated for an Oscar).
