An expedition in Brazilian music, in the view of Finnish producer and director Mika Kaurismäki, the film is a record of the many cultures, rhythms, and forms of musical expression in Brazil. In the course of four thousand kilometers of travel and discoveries throughout the country, he meets musicians, singers, and dancers in a great variety of styles. Kaurismäki allows a national heritage to speak for itself in stories told by the Brazilian people. The director comments: "Brazil is, undoubtedly, a country with one of the richest musical traditions in the world. Many people abroad are familiar only with rhythms such as bossa nova and samba; however, there is much more to be discovered – maracatu, frevo, coco, forró, embolada, etc. The influence of Indians, Africans, Europeans (in particular the Portuguese), Arabs, and other peoples contributed to this unbelievable variety of musical expression".
