Different characters linked by contempt, by pain and suffering meet through a common denominator that unites all, symbolized by mezcal, popular liquor that is typically Mexican, like tequila. Mezcal is consumed to alleviate the pain in the soul and is always present in stories told: for a mother at her son?s wake, for a woman who would just like to die to relieve her age and loneliness, for a drunk whose marriage is on the rocks, for his ex-wife remembering her childhood and longing for her father, for a man who had to kill his cousin in his youth and is now tormented by guilt, for the man who must dig the tombs for other men and who supports the idea that buzzards and not worms should decompose the dead, and for the carnival revelers who drink to sameness and the boredom of their lives with numbed laughter.
