Sumanta is a shy book clerk in conflict with the powerful memories of his father. The force of this memory often takes him back to his childhood when his family led an idyllic life, which was, however, destroyed when it is known his father had, all the while, had a mistress. Sumanta becomes an adult and a father and also becomes familiar with the trials and tribulations of an unsatisfactory marriage. Supriya, his wife, is from the middle class and seeks success as a writer. She attains success with a best-seller on France, and Sumanta is to show he has incorporated more than one characteristic from his dominating, chauvinistic father. Based on America, America, a novel by the director himself.

BUDDHADEB DASGUPTA

Indian director born in Anara in 1946 and today, outstanding as one of the principal directors in his country. His films have been awarded prizes as much in his own country as in the rest of the world. Several of these received a prize for Best Film of the Year in India. His best known films include Duratwa (1978), Andhi Gali (1984), Lal Darla (1996). The Wrestlers is his most recent film.
