During the Dawn of Man, a tribe of primitive humans encounters a black monolith in the desert. Thousands of years later, the discovery of another monolith on the moon leads to the launch of the Discovery One space mission to Jupiter, controlled by the HAL 9000 computer, to investigate the object’s origin. The safety of the crew is jeopardized when HAL malfunctions. Based on the short story The Sentinel, by Arthur C. Clarke, the film gave Stanley Kubrick the only Oscar of his career, for best visual effects.

There they were, two secular non-religious intellectuals, a scientist-cum-writer and a skeptical agnostic filmmaker – and both take a respectful bow to the Unknowable Creator of the Universe stating that evolution is the most miraculous element in Creation.

STANLEY KUBRICK

Born in New York City in 1926, Stanley Kubrick is now regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Beginning his career as a professional photographer for Look magazine at the age of seventeen, the job led to the production a series of self-financed short newsreels for movie theaters. His first attempt at making a feature was Fear and Desire (1953), a film he later pulled out of circulation. His feature film career officially began with the film noirs Killer’s Kiss (1953) and The Killing (1955). The latter’s success brought Kubrick to the attention of MGM, where he made his third feature: the WWI film Paths of Glory (1957), with Kirk Douglas. His association with Douglas led to him replacing the initial director of Spartacus (1960), the historical epic where the actor played the title role. After the film’s financial success, Kubrick relocated to England, where he would spend the rest of his life directing films with more artistic freedom, tackling the most diverse of cinematic genres: comedy with Lolita (1962) and Dr. Strangelove: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), science fiction with 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and A Clockwork Orange (1971), costume drama with Barry Lyndon (1975), horror with The Shining (1980) and war film with Full Metal Jacket (1987). Kubrick died months before the release of his last film, Eyes Wide Shut (1999). The 37th Mostra is holding a complete retrospective of his work, along with co-publishing Michel Ciment’s book Kubrick with Cosac Naify.
