Peter de Wit, a ripe 50 and pronounced dead, wakes in the middle of the night to find he is lying on a stretcher in a morgue. How ever did he get there? He has absolutely no memory whatsoever of what could have happened and would rather not remember. Peter assumes the identity of the corpse he has robbed of a wallet, embarks on a new life, and dreams up a biography of his own. He becomes Lars Erickson, an enigmatic Swedish businessman. One night he meets up with young Lucie, a neurotic artist and drug-addict who seems to have lost her memory. Almost unawares, Peter takes over control and becomes an important part of her life.
