The involvement of Czech director Vojtech Jasny with the Holocaust goes far beyond directing Hell on Earth. After his father was deported and assassinated in Auschwitz, Jasny became an active member of the Czech resistance and also acted as a spy for the allies throughout the Second World War. Such involvement led him also to focus on life and death in Theresienstadt, the “model” concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, where the Nazis would take diplomats to show how the Jewish people were being “well treated”. “I chose this title because it is closest to what occurred. This was a period in which the demons in the human mind darkened the world. The film is not only a documentary - it is a horror film”, says the director. Professor Yehuda Bauer, historian, acted in an advisory capacity in the making of this documentary.

VOJTECH JASNY

Born in Kele, in Moravia (today the Czech Republic) in 1925, he made his first film, a documentary Není Stále Zamraceno (1950). He became known worldwide with the film When the Cat Comes (special award by the jury in Cannes in 1963). He was one of the leaders of the movement of democratic opening in Czechoslovakia known as the Prague Spring (put to an end by the advance of Soviet tanks into the capital in 1968). He also directed features such as All My Good Countrymen (special award by the jury in Cannes in 1969), The Peanut Butter Solution (1985), and Gladys (1999). In 1995, he partially financed and acted in the film Freezing Sunlight, by Kazuhiro Soda (selected for the 20th Mostra).
