An adaptation of the much acclaimed play by the same name on the off-Broadway circuit, the film tells the story of a rock singer and her quest for stardom and for love. Hedwig (played by Director John Cameron Mitchell) was born a boy, given the name of Hansel, grew up with his mother in East Germany and spent most of his childhood listening to the radio from the U.S. armed forces. In his youth, Hansel meets Luther, a sweet American recruit, who declares himself in love and asks him in marriage with the promise he will take him to the U.S.. To be able to marry, Hansel submits to surgery to change his sex and becomes Hedwig. Some years later, abandoned by Luther, who changes her for a young boy, she decides to devote herself to a lifelong passion: rock. Together with some friends from Eastern Europe, she starts an underground band that performs in a chain of seafood restaurants. In dirges, monologues and song, Hedwig tells the turbulent story of her life to customers perplexed with what they are listening to.
