At the age of fifty and some years, Zhao has decided to anticipate his retirement. He has been gulled into marriage to a plump widow. She, in turn, wrongly believes that Zhao is the owner of a hotel - a paying concern. Somewhat grasping, she asks her fiancé for 50,000 yuan as a wedding present. To get the money, Zhao tries his best to become a hotel keeper. Aided and abetted by his friend Li, they transform an old bus into a type of moving motel. When Zhao meets Wu Ying, a sweet young blind girl who asks him for a job as a masseuse, it would seem his luck is about to change. But the police soon descend on the Happy Times Motel. The film was part of the official selection for the 2002 Berlin Film Festival.

His debut as a director was in 1988 with Red Sorghum, shown at the 12th Mostra. He then made, among others, Raise the Red Lantern (1991), To Live (1994), Keep Cool (1997, 21st Mostra), Not One Less (1998, 23rd Mostra), The Road Home (1999, 24th Mostra), Happy Times Motel (2000, 26th Mostra), Hero (2002, 28th Mostra), House of Flying Daggers (2004) and The Curse of the Golden Flower (2006, 31st Mostra).
