In Krsko, a small Slovene industrial city near the borders with Croatia, lives Ludvik, an ex-racing driver. A cynical widower, he ferries illegal immigrants from Croatia as far as the Italian frontier, people coming from the former Soviet Union, from Pakistan and from Afghanistan, in addition to Kurds, Albanians, and Macedonians. These people are known as ‘spare’, because the majority will donate a kidney or another organ in exchange for transportation. One day, Ludvik’s boss introduces him to an inexperienced co-pilot, Rudi by name. On the first journey together, Ludvik puts his new companion’s loyalty to test by turning a young girl’s utter despair to use in asking her sexual favors. Rudi voices his moral scruples as regards this type of behavior. Ludvik decides to steer away from the boy and his company. Rudi, however, proves to be the more cruel and unfeeling of the two.
