Don Johnston is a bachelor by conviction who has made money in information technology. He is abandoned by his most recent girlfriend and decides to make it on his own. An anonymous letter from a former mistress, however, arrives to inform him that 19 years ago he became a father. The news poses Johnston a different challenge, namely, having to go back into his past. With encouragement from an Ethiopian friend, Johnston tries to ascertain which of the four women he had an affair with in the past is the mother of his child. In this way, he goes back over his own life, with an idea of how he might have lived and what he might have become, if he had chosen to remain with them. In each of the four encounters, Don is faced with one type of unhappiness that gradually makes him aware of his own distress.
