The End of Summer

Penúltimo filme de Ozu, escrito em parceria com seu roteirista habitual, Kogo Noda. Retrato da família Kohayagawa, proprietária de uma pequena fábrica de saquê no Japão do pós-guerra. O negócio prospera e se torna uma grande empresa. A filha mais nova, Noriko, está a espera de um casamento arranjado e, enquanto isso, ajuda a cunhada viúva Akiko a procurar um homem para poder se casar novamente. O chefe do clã, o perverso Manbei tem uma amante e com ela uma filha de 21 anos, Yuriko, foco de problemas para toda a família. Ele tem um repentino problema de saúde e todos os membros juntam-se ao redor de sua cama. O filme analisa as diferenças entre o velho e o novo durante as transformações econômicas sofridas pelo Japão durante o Plano Marshall, no pós-guerra, além de filosofar sobre a possibilidade de conciliar desejos e sentimentos.

Born in Tokyo, 1903. In 1922, he got a job at Shochiku Studios and later directed his first film, Sword of Penitence (1927). Among his first films, I Graduated But... (1930) and Tokyo Chorus (1931, 27th Mostra) stand out. During World War II, he was imprisoned and sentenced to forced labor by the British. He eventually returned to filmmaking and directed Late Spring (1949), regarded in Japan as a masterpiece. The stand-out films that make up the latter half of his filmography are Early Summer (1951), Tokyo Story (1953), The Equinox Flower (1958), and Floating Weeds (1959). His last films – Good Morning (1959), Late Autumn (1960), The End of Summer (1961) and An Autumn Afternoon (1962) – were all screened during the 27th Mostra. Ozu died in 1963, on the day he would have turned 60, leaving behind 53 films.
